beaches, a monk seal and Kilauea eruption

Today we drove to the beaches on the north shore of the Big island in order to see more beaches and maybe some sea turtles. Instead we saw a monk seal. In the morning Michelle, our host wrote me, that the eruption of Kilauea volcano was starting. We didn`t really believe that it was happening today. Later she wrote me again to start wherever we were with the car and go there at once, because the lava fountain was growing bigger and bigger. From the north shore it was about 2 hours drive to the Volcano National Park on the other side of the island.

We bought water and sandwiches, because we wanted to assist at this spectacular event for some time. We were very excited when we arrived at the National Park and then at Devastation lookout. We fortunately found a parking spot and had to walk 1.5 km to watch the eruption. It was very exciting. We knew that we were very lucky as our flight back was in 3 days in the morning.

To watch the eruption at night and with the full moon was so incredible. We were so lucky and happy that Pele the goddes of  fire and Hawaii`s volcanoes made this happen!

A black sand beach at Kiholo Bay without turtles. 14 years ago it was full of turtles.

A white sandy beach

A beautiful beach,

with a lot of palm trees

It is very rare to see a monk seal in Hawaii. This was the second one we saw. The first one was in Kauai. At this beach I also saw three sea turtles in the water. We left the beach and drove to the Volcano National Park.

The sky was red and pink.

Beautiful  lava fountain, that was 2.5 km away from us. In the end it was 150 m high. Incredible!!

People watching the eruption with us.

What a lava fountain and what a lava flow!

All the people were quiet, everybody was fascinated.

The tree was red!

Mahalo (thank you in Hawaiian) Pele, Mahalo Kilauea!
