After the springbock release we drove to the plain were the female rhino Bernina and her calf with no name were grazing. The helicopter came and the vet flew over the two rhinos and darted them. The dart was removed by the vet and his vet nurse. After that they gave them the reversal. The English vet nurses could give the rhinos vitamins. In the end it was very sad because the baby rhino stopped breathing and died. The vet explained later that it could have been a biochemical reaction to the sedation medicine. We all cried in our vehicle.
The helicopter flew over the two rhinos. The vet stood in the door and darted them from above.
Sam and the vet nurse ran to the rhino mum to take away the dart.
The vet nurses held the baby rhino so that it wouldn`t fall at one side. They were also controlling it`s breath.
The eyes of the rhino were covered to avoid the stress. The vet had marked the ears for the notching. The vet then put some scissors on the marking and cut the angles out. The notching is a method to recognize the rhinos again and to make the monitoring of them possible.
Everybody was around the baby rhino.
When the baby nearly stopped breathing Sam jumped on it. Peter the vet on the right game him some medicaments. But unfortunately the baby rhino died. The mum woke up. We found her three days later hanging around with another male rhino. Fortunately!
